February 08,2013 - Pranayama Classes

Dear friends,

Having studied and applied various techniques of Yoga and Ayurveda the past twenty years, one of the most powerful and beneficial practices in my experience is that of Pranayama (breathing exercise).
Pranayama directly affects the mind and puts it in a relaxed, clear, and focused state. It also has a calming effect on the nervous system while balancing hormones, revitalizing tissues, organs, and digestive fire. Pranayama can be practiced by people of all ages, and becomes even more important in the second half of life.
Prana means life force, and Pranayama means controlling this life force with awareness. Prana is linked to our vital breath and follows our focus allowing us to direct Prana to all parts of the body, bringing harmony into our emotions and consciousness.

In this class we will learn and practice various pranayamas, some to clear accumulated Vata, Pitta, and Kapha from the system. This prepares the body/mind to receive the free flow of prana. We will also explore the practice of simple effective chanting and meditation.
